Celebrating #flowershirtfriday with @teamflower today and these local tulips and ranunculus from @wollamgardens & @grateful_gardeners . Yesterday was not a good day ... felt defeated in every way. Behind that smile is someone who struggles with anxiety & depression and yesterday they were winning - this situation is not easy for anyone. But today ... @kelly_perry and our flower farmers reminded me that each day we get another chance to love & celebrate. It’s ok to not be ok through this. I can attest that flowers are essential to my mental health and many others ... so I’m going to keep showing up each day, no apologies, for my kids, my family & friends, my couples, my flower friends, and our flower farmers. I’m going to keep flowering until I can’t. . . Last June I was able to visit my friend Walt, in Warren, Vermont, and see his farm @mountainflowerfarm for the first time. I was able to walk the fields where the blooms that have graced my summer weddings were grown, harvested and shipped to me for the last 6 years. . . . . Mountain Flower Farm, like all flower farms across the U.S. and world are facing an uncertain future with product they can’t sell now and may not be able to for a few months. Most of our spring weddings have postponed and we are hoping to be back to our new normal mid June on. Walt’s peony inventory is live today and he also launched his floral designer relief package. He sees the value in being able to support the floral designers that have contributed to his farms success over the last 22 years. While his loss will be around 80% this year he’s willing to push through. Across the board this will be most flower farmers reality. But working together is the only way we will come out on the other side. . . . So if you have June and early July weddings connect with @mountainflowerfarm and place your order, and do it with a designer friend if you can’t meet the minimum. . . . Now is the time to start planning ahead. Where will you be sourcing this summer and fall? Get ready for July and August weddings with Alaskan peonies, connect with your local farmers and learn their availability for each month. Put the work in now so you can hit the ground running when this is over. Don’t wait until it’s over to start educating and planning. . . . #americangrown #originmatters #peonies #weddingflowers #vermontgrown #covid19 #farmersandflorists #eventflorists #florists #wheredoyourflowerscomefrom #slowflowers #saveourflowerfarmers #knowthyfarmer #thefloralsource #petalsbytheshore

Yes my friends “Keep calm and flower on” however that may look for you. Everyone is trying to navigate what “flower on” means for them as a grower, as a designer, as a retail shop, as a mass market provider, as a transportation company, as a wholesaler. Can we keep the flowers moving? . . It’s hard to know depending on where you are and what your state has enacted whether you can and honestly it changes by the day. It’s such a time of uncertainty- but the flowers keep blooming and they have no where to go. . . But I will tell you there is hope and joy found in flowers and I’m witnessing it like never before. I’m seeing what even a single bloom can do to someone’s spirits. I’m seeing tears flow and smiles so big when flowers are received. So I tell you ... flowers are essential to our mental health and our well being in isolation and fear. So if you can continue to provide flowers for those in need of flower therapy keep on keeping on. Our farms need their blooms to keep moving and our people, our communities need to flowers in their homes to give them hope to get them through. I don’t have the perfect answer, no one does, the playbook is being written daily. So practice the utmost levels of safety & health and if you can’t flower on in the way you want to then keep sharing beautiful flower pictures, highlight a flower farmer or many on your social media and check in on one another. Above all keep practicing kindness and compassion through these times. . . ** Maryland designers nonessential businesses can still deliver following CDC guidelines. Weddings in a time of COVID-19. I honestly didn’t think designing a bridal bouquet was in my future until later this summer. But Lindsey reached out to me on IG and asked if it was possible for me to design a bouquet for her sister for Sunday afternoon. Emily was originally supposed to have a 300 person wedding and had decided to celebrate despite the worlds current situation even if that meant she would be getting married outside the church with her pastor and parents. . . When Lindsey backed into my driveway yesterday and popped the truck on her van so I could no contact place the bouquet in - 2 rows up and with sober and thankful eyes was 4 year old Samuel looking at me and he graciously said, without his mother’s prompting, “Kelly, thank you so much for the beautiful flowers, thank you so much.” He was dressed in his little man suit and his sister 2 year old sister Elsa was in her flower girl dress. They were both so sad to not be in the wedding but we’re going to proudly show their aunt support with waves from the van. . . Little Samuel thanked mr over and over and truly understood the power of flowers. I asked what his favorite color flower was he he proudly said “red, but if you don’t have red I like yellow too!” So I got a vase together of all the red flowers I had and from the van he yells “hey Kelly if you have pink flowers for my sister that would be great too!” They were beyond grateful for the flowers and while I know I made their day a little brighter they truly lifted my spirits and gave me purpose on that Sunday morning. . . I cried when I went in the house so loved by little Samuel’s true appreciation for what those flowers meant to his aunt and his mom. At 4 he understands the power of flowers and how they can heal our sadness and fear. . . Thank you to @greenvalleyfloralco.1973 @camflorinc and @grateful_gardeners for helping me bring sunshine and hope into the world yesterday. . . While we were just given a stay at home order here in Maryland, I won’t be flowering for awhile. But I hope that our community can find peace, rest and healing in this time and know that we will be here with flowers when this is over.

Peonies by the Shore - An American Grown Project

July 10, 2018

I always love when I have to break the news that Petals by the Shore is a play on my name and not actually a flower studio by the eastern shore, it's a great conversation starter.  But I will admit that having my studio by the shore one day is definitely a dream.  What shore? Well that I'm not sure. I still have a lot of exploring to do and places to see and I may happen upon a certain shore that just calls to me.

One shore in particular that stole my heart was the rugged coastline that wraps itself around Homer, Alaska.  Kachemak Bay and the glacier ridge behind it were my view for a week in the summer of 2017 when I was a guest designer for the Field to Vase Dinner at Scenic Place Peonies, a Certified American Grown flower farm.  When I decided I was taking this trip of a lifetime I thought it would be my one and only opportunity so I wanted to make the most of it.  Which to this floral designer meant a creative photo shoot!  I reached out to a photographer through instagram finding her by way of #homeralaskaphotographer.  (Use those hashtags friends - they are everything and open doors!) Donna Smith of Donna Marie Photography and I connected a month before I made my trip and we planned a shoot to take place on the farm and also one to take place on the water down at the Homer Spit - a 4 1/2 mile long piece of land jutting out into the bay.  I knew I wanted a full immersion experience. I am an experiential learner so I have to connect all the senses.  We had the intoxicating smell of the peonies, the salty taste of the ocean in the air, the calming sound of the waves, the sight of the mist and muted tones, and the bitter feel of the rain and the dipping temperatures.

With July being American Flowers Month I felt it was a great time to finally share this collaboration that came together so beautifully and gave me the opportunity to truly be Petals by the Shore.

For both shoots we created different looks with different dresses and bouquets.  The shoot on the farm was featured in the October 2017 issue of Florists Review magazine.  It was titled American Grown Heroes: An Alaska Peony Love Affair and written by Debra Prinzing.  That shoot focused on the fields of peonies at Scenic Place Peonies and a lush brightly colored bridal bouquet that screamed  Midnight Summers Dream.

For the coastal shoot I wanted something more subdued, more ethereal and moody that would highlight the variety of white peonies that grow on the farm.  I wanted to to use them all and give them their moment to shine. So many brides want the pure white peonies like Elsa Sass and Bowl of Cream and throw shade on the other varieties with subtle lemon and cream undertones, vying for the pure white double petaled ones. But putting all the varieties together became a way for me to challenge the expected and show how beautiful all the tones and layers can blend to create something unique.  The white peonies grow prolifically on the farm and ship well thus dominating the inventory so I had an abundance of choices to pull from.  The varieties I used included Bowl of Cream, Avalance, Festiva Maxima and Duchess de Nemours.   I wanted the bouquet to be very authentic and reflective of place so I added clam shells collected on the beach and other grasses, foliage and white blooms harvested and foraged from the farm.  The high tunnel on the farm had an abundance of foxglove, statice, white salvia, dusty miller, snapdragons, feverfew and sweet peas that I used to accent the big fluffy blooms.  Not your typical white bridal bouquet which is what I love!  I want to continually challenge what can be used and redefine what is considered beautiful and romantic and I want all the texture, always!

Chelsea-Homer Spit-12.jpg

The weather provided the perfect moodiness and grey tones.  The only thing missing was the backdrop of the glaciers which were hidden by fog and mist.

Our model and makeup artist, Chelsea Aberkane of Borealis Beauty, was my hero rocking her roll in 40 degree rainy temps.  True hardcore Alaskan spirit! And as you'll see below - she embodied all the emotion that I hoped the shoot would create - her eyes just draw you in and capture you.  Donna Marie was unbelievable seeing the whole vision and knowing how to capture all the senses - better than I ever imagined!  What a beautiful collaboration this was!

My awesome and talented friends here in Maryland created some pieces that I took with me.  Sara Lowe of Lowe Love Calligraphy made a beautiful hand painted and calligraphy sign that I packed in my suitcase and now sits in the packhouse at the farm as a reminder of our week.  Ashley Hooker of Hookberry created a beautiful invitation suite to complement all the colors and textures.

Donna Marie's friend, Nicole of Seaglass and Stardust, hand designed the sea glass pieces, including a ring.  I adorned the floral crown with her beautiful sea glass pieces as well as peony buds and little textural bits from the farm.  All the seaglass she collected on the shores throughout Alaska.  Talk about keeping things authentic.  Everything was purely Alaskan (at least in my eyes) and gave me an opportunity to create to create and in one of the most beautiful places I've ever experienced.  I'm beyond excited to return to Alaska next week and do it all over again but even better!  I can only imagine the adventure and creativity that awaits and to share more beauty with you!
